BẸ̀MBẸ́ (bem-bey)
Traditional Yoruba bass drum from Nigeria with shoulder strap, played for kings or in procession.
This drum has a twisted skin string across the skin to create a buzzing "snare" sound. Played with a straight or curved stick. Bells/jingles called Saworo can be attached around the edge of the largest drum, and if the player uses two sticks, agogo bells can be attached and played simultaneously. Shekere can also be played on the back skin whilst playing the front.
